Think Your Car Is Having Transmission Problems? 3 Signs To Watch Out For

Blog

If your car is not driving right, this could be due to many things. One thing that can cause problems is the transmission. This part is important for the entire car to run well. Fortunately, there are many signs you can watch out for to know that the transmission needs to be repaired. Below are three of these signs to help you get started.

Car Making Weird Noises

You will hear weird noises coming from your car if the transmission is having problems. For example, buzzing and humming sounds are common. You will hear this while the car is idling as well as while you are driving. If you take your car to a mechanic when you first start hearing these noises, you may save money. This is because you will save the transmission from developing further damage.

In most cases, hearing these two sounds means the gears in the transmission are going bad and/or are damaged in some way. A mechanic can replace the gears to prevent further problems with the transmission.

Transmission Slipping

If your transmission is having slipping problems, you will notice different symptoms, such as:

  • Not being able to go into reverse
  • RPMs much higher when driving
  • A burnt or unusual smell
  • Grinding noises when you shift gears with manual transmission
  • Less power when gears change with automatic transmission.

To repair this problem, the gears may need to be replaced. This can also be caused by worn-out transmission bands, clutch problems, torque converter problems, and solenoid problems.

Engine Not Working at All

If your engine goes down completely, it may be because you have low or no transmission fluid. If this is the case, then you have a transmission leak. You will know this if you see red liquid under your car after it has set. If the color of the liquid is a very dark or brown color, then the transmission fluid is old and needs to be replaced. Before you do this, you need to determine why the fluid is leaking and repair the problem.

Transmission fluid is important as it lubricates the transmission and cleans the seals. You need to hire a mechanic to repair the leak for you and then replace the transmission fluid with new fluid.

Talk to a mechanic about this and they can give you much more information. The mechanic can also tell you of other symptoms your car will have if there is a problem with the transmission. If the transmission itself needs to be replaced, you may have to purchase a brand-new one or the mechanic may be able to rebuild the current transmission to save you money.

Knowing the Early Signs of Car Trouble

After my car died and I was stranded on the freeway a few years back, I knew that I had to do what I could to avoid similar issues in the future. I began working hard to identify different issues with my car, so that I could prevent problems. I began working with a mechanic to get help, and he taught me a lot about going through my car and being able to evaluate different things that were problems. It was really interesting to explore the possibilities of different car failures, and before I knew it, I could tell when my car was struggling.
